Tajik Afghans

The Tajik Afghans people group in Afghanistan are estimated by Joshua Project to have a population of about 12.8 million, making them one of the world’s largest unreached people groups. A people-group label is a missions-research category, not a complete description of every person. Individuals within the Tajik Afghans may live in cities, towns, villages, or diaspora communities; levels of education, occupation, religious practice, and cultural identity can vary widely. Language, family ties, local history, and shared identity often shape how people receive new ideas and whom they trust. For that reason, meaningful engagement should avoid stereotypes and should begin with listening, respect, and relationships. Joshua Project reports a Christian-adherent range of 0–0.1% for this community, which helps explain why the group is classified as unreached. The statistic does not mean that no Christians are present, nor does it identify the faith of any individual person. Rather, it indicates that Christian presence is small relative to the size of the group and that many people may have little opportunity to know a local follower of Jesus or participate in a culturally understandable church community. Learning about the Tajik Afghans can therefore lead to informed prayer: for their families and communities, for peace and human flourishing, for access to Scripture and the Gospel, and for local believers who can serve with humility, wisdom, and love.
