A History of God's Faithfulness in Belgium

Belgium’s modern evangelical missions story was profoundly shaped by World War I. Ralph and Edith Norton began ministry among Belgian soldiers and moved to Brussels in 1919, founding the Belgian Gospel Mission. Through evangelism tents, Bible distribution, mobile chapels, and church planting, the mission developed dozens of congregations before World War II. Later teams continued planting and strengthening churches across Flanders and Wallonia. Today, the movement known as VIANOVA has renewed its focus on disciple-making and church planting in an increasingly secular and multicultural Belgium.

  1. Early Beginnings

    World War I evangelism among Belgian soldiers helped inspire a permanent mission to Belgium.

  2. 1900s

    The Belgian Gospel Mission was founded in Brussels in 1919 and quickly began planting churches.

  3. Independence Era

    By the late 1930s, dozens of congregations had formed through evangelism and Bible distribution.

  4. Modern Movement

    Postwar teams used mobile chapels, year teams, and city campaigns to plant and strengthen churches.

  5. Today

    Today, Belgium needs renewed disciple-making among secular Europeans and unreached diaspora peoples.
