A History of God's Faithfulness in Portugal

Bible societies and British-linked evangelical workers expanded in Portugal during the 19th century, followed by Brethren, Baptist, Pentecostal, and independent congregations. Portuguese pastors gradually assumed leadership as foreign influence declined. Today immigration from Africa, Brazil, and Asia is reshaping the movement, creating new opportunities for multicultural churches, leadership training, and mission beyond Portugal.

  1. Early Beginnings

    Bible societies and British-linked evangelical workers expanded in the 19th century.

  2. 1900s

    Brethren, Baptist, Pentecostal, and independent churches later developed Portuguese leadership.

  3. Independence Era

    Portuguese pastors gradually led Brethren, Baptist, Pentecostal, and independent churches as foreign influence declined.

  4. Modern Movement

    Immigration from Africa, Brazil, and Asia is reshaping evangelical congregations in Lisbon, Porto, and other Portuguese cities.

  5. Today

    Portugal's small evangelical movement is becoming more multicultural as immigration creates new church-planting and diaspora opportunities.
