A History of God's Faithfulness in Albania

Albania has ancient Christian roots, but its modern evangelical story accelerated in the 19th century through Bible translation, publishing, and preaching in Albanian. Communist rule eventually imposed one of the world’s harshest atheist systems, and in 1967 Albania officially banned religious practice. When religious freedom returned around 1990, Albanian believers and international partners planted churches, trained leaders, and launched youth and compassion ministries. Today, local churches are maturing and increasingly participating in mission across the Balkans.

  1. Early Beginnings

    Bible translation and evangelical witness in the 1800s helped establish Albanian-language ministry.

  2. 1900s

    Communist rule culminated in a 1967 ban on religion, severely restricting Christian worship.

  3. Independence Era

    After 1990, Albanian believers and mission partners planted churches and trained local leaders.

  4. Modern Movement

    Churches expanded youth outreach, discipleship, compassion ministry, and theological training.

  5. Today

    Today, Albanian churches are maturing and increasingly joining Gospel work across the Balkans.
