A History of God's Faithfulness in Botswana

Botswana’s evangelical history reaches to the early 19th century, when London Missionary Society workers and African evangelists carried the Gospel among Tswana peoples. Robert Moffat’s language work helped standardize written Setswana and advance Bible translation, while David Livingstone established a mission at Kolobeng in 1846. Tswana believers increasingly became evangelists and church leaders themselves. During the 20th century, additional evangelical and Pentecostal movements expanded. Today, Botswana’s challenge is to deepen a broad Christian heritage and grow as a missionary-sending church.

  1. Early Beginnings

    Early 19th-century workers and African evangelists carried the Gospel among Tswana peoples.

  2. 1900s

    Robert Moffat's Setswana language work helped make Scripture accessible in a heart language.

  3. Independence Era

    David Livingstone established a mission at Kolobeng in 1846 among the Bakwena people.

  4. Modern Movement

    Tswana pastors and evangelists increasingly led churches as new movements spread in the 1900s.

  5. Today

    Today, Botswana's opportunity is deeper discipleship and a stronger southern African sending role.
