A History of God's Faithfulness in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)’s evangelical missions story is closely tied to this history: 19th-century missions planted churches along the Congo River and inland; revival and African-led movements later produced one of the continent’s largest churches. Over time, responsibility increasingly shifted toward local pastors, evangelists, teachers, and churches rather than remaining primarily in foreign hands. Political change, migration, conflict.

  1. Early Beginnings

Baptist missionaries entered the Congo River region in the late 19th century, followed by many evangelical mission societies.

  2. 1900s

Translation, schools, medical work, and church planting spread inland across an enormous and linguistically diverse territory.

  3. Independence Era

Congolese revival movements and local evangelists helped Christianity grow far beyond the original mission stations.

  4. Modern Movement

Independence and repeated eastern wars placed greater responsibility on national churches while creating vast humanitarian needs.

  5. Today

DRC believers now form one of Africa's largest Christian communities and increasingly serve as missionaries themselves.
