The State of Missions in Iceland

For missions in Iceland, history and present need meet in a distinctive way. The Lutheran Reformation became Iceland’s established Christian framework during the 16th century. Today the country is marked by a tiny, highly secular Nordic population with almost no frontier peoples but limited evangelical church life. 2 UPGs remain, totaling about 2,300 unreached people; Thai, Isan is the largest listed group.

A History of God's Faithfulness in Iceland

Evangelical mission in Iceland is best understood through its own historical setting. Lutheran Christianity shaped Iceland for centuries, while modern evangelical and free-church communities remained small; recent immigration has added new congregations and cross-cultural opportunities. The movement changed as local Christians moved from receiving ministry to leading churches, teaching Scripture, serving communities, and sometimes sending missionaries themselves.

  1. Early Beginnings

The Lutheran Reformation became Iceland's established Christian framework during the 16th century.

  2. 1900s

Pietist and revival influences later encouraged Bible reading and personal devotion within the national church.

  3. Independence Era

Small Pentecostal and free-church congregations emerged during the 20th century but remained a minority.

  4. Modern Movement

Rapid secularization and immigration reshaped Reykjavík and other communities in recent decades.

  5. Today

Icelandic evangelicals now minister in a highly secular society while multicultural congregations add new energy.
